Just as the mangroves thrive in saltwater where most plants are choked of life, Miami grew in an area thought uninhabitable. Mangalsare found in depositional coastal environments where fine sediments with high organic content collect in areas protected from high-energy wave action. Miami has been destroyed many times by natural disasters, impeded by depressions, and has overcome numerous socioeconomic challenges but like the mangroves, continues to thrive. Along with rapid growth, this is how it came to be called the "Magic City."
